In the present day scenario, Ajrakh is practiced in
Ajrakhpur (Bhuj, Gujarat), Sindh (Pakistan) and Barmer (Rajasthan). With a
distinctive style present in each of these cities, the differences are easily
observed and can be attributed to the individual cities. The colours and blocks
both vary significantly amongst the three cities.
Ajrakh is a highly complicated process, with about 14-15 steps
that are involved in the production of any block printed fabric. Multiple steps
of washing, dyeing and drying are involved in the process with different
compounds like harda, alizarin, indigo and lime. Overall, geometric blocks are
utilised with two or three blocks used for each design.
